Fortuna Sittard has apologised after fierce criticism from fans over a special Oktoberfest kit. The club presented the white and blue shirt with a diamond pattern on Monday for the home match against FC Twente, but fans reacted angrily because the club logo was made unrecognisable.
Logo altered
One fan said the shirt was not to his taste anyway, but altering the logo was the final straw. "Het shirt is al niet mijn smaak, maar dan ook nog ons logo verkloten? Zonde!" said a supporter. Another fan thought the number of shirts per season was already excessive. "Meer dan 3 shirts in een seizoen vind ik belachelijk, en dan begin ik nog niet eens over het logo..."
The club responded to the criticism and stated it never intended to cause negative reactions. Fortuna Sittard emphasised the kit was meant to bring an Oktoberfest atmosphere to the stands for the important match on Saturday evening at 20:00. The Limburg-based side currently sit sixth in the Eredivisie with 13 points from seven games. The full standings are available here.
Important fixture
The home game against FC Twente is a key fixture in the league. Twente are fourth and won the last meeting in March 1-2. Fortuna Sittard, after a mixed run of one win, one draw and three defeats in their last five matches, are looking to pick up points again. The lineup and current squad are vital for coach Danny Buijs.
The special kit will be worn on Saturday, despite the controversy. The club hopes attention will quickly return to the pitch, where the team aims to defend its sixth-place position. The match against FC Twente is the next on the fixtures calendar.
