Fortuna Sittard is in talks with Daley Sinkgraven over a new contract. The 31-year-old defender, who joined in February 2025, made his return in a friendly last weekend after a long injury layoff.
Sinkgraven suffered a serious knee injury, tearing his cruciate ligament, in his second appearance for the club against AZ. His contract expired last summer, but the club did not release him. Instead, the former Ajax and Bayer Leverkusen player continued training at the club to complete his rehabilitation. That commitment was rewarded last weekend with a start in the friendly win (1-2) against KRC Genk, where he played deep into the second half.
Contract negotiations
The club is now negotiating to secure Sinkgraven on a new deal. An agreement has not yet been reached, but the parties are close to a return as a contracted player. Four years ago, the defender was linked with a move to FC Twente, but that never led to concrete interest.
For Fortuna, who sit sixth with 13 points from seven games, Sinkgraven's fitness is a welcome boost. The team has scored 13 goals and conceded 14 this season. The next test is on Saturday at 20:00 at Fortuna Sittard Stadion against FC Twente, who are fourth. The referee will be Robin Hensgens, assisted by Michael Osseweijer and Franca Overtoom. The last meeting between these clubs, in March, ended in a 1-2 defeat for Fortuna. Fans can check the current standings and the full squad on the site.
Sinkgraven's return comes at a key moment, just before a match against a direct rival. His experience could strengthen the defence as the team looks to bounce back from their last league result, a 2-0 loss to Utrecht.
