Fortuna Sittard cemented their top-six position in the Eredivisie with a late victory at Willem II. Danny Buijs's side won 1-0 in Tilburg on Saturday thanks to a 79th-minute goal from Philip Brittijn.

Late winner

The match remained goalless for long periods despite chances at both ends. Devin Haen was denied by goalkeeper Mattijs Branderhorst in the 11th minute, while Jaden Slory forced a save just before half-time. The deadlock persisted after the break until Lequincio Zeefuik's 79th-minute header was saved. Keeper Maxime Delanghe parried it, but Brittijn was quickest to the rebound. "I was in the right place to work the rebound in," the goalscorer said.

Position strengthened

The win marks Fortuna Sittard's fourth league victory this season. The club now has 13 points from seven games and sits sixth in the table, six points behind leaders AZ. Their recent form shows three wins and two defeats from the last five matches. The next challenge is a home fixture against fourth-placed FC Twente on 10 October. The last meeting between the sides ended in a 1-2 defeat for Fortuna. The full standings and upcoming schedule are available on our fixtures page.

Manager Danny Buijs was pleased his team entered the international break with a win. "The team went into the international break with a victory," the coach said. Willem II dropped to 18th and last place with just two points.
